Pedagogy
The central goal of my teaching is to offer students an orientation: a way of situating themselves in relation to the world, to one another, and to themselves. I want students to leave my classes not only with knowledge about philosophical arguments, but also a sense of how those arguments can help them navigate their civic, professional, and personal lives. Providing an orientation requires providing mentorship: showing students how to engage with philosophy, how to take themselves seriously as thinkers, and how to use what they learn in specific ways. It is important to me to teach students to evaluate arguments and avoid imposing my own views, thus I favor a Socratic approach to classroom teaching.
